Legacy Leaders

Jane Nelson Institute Legacy Leaders Program is open to first-time in college students starting in the fall semester in a full-time capacity. Students who are selected to join the Legacy Leaders Program demonstrate the ability to lead, have high academic standards and are invested in learning more about government and non-profit organizations to become future community leaders and influencers. Legacy Leaders will participate in a host of programs and opportunities that will expand their knowledge and networks. Students will actively participate in the program each year. Participation will include monthly symposiums and/or up to 30-hours of community service / internship requirements

An $11,000 scholarship is awarded to Legacy Leaders and is renewable for up to four years. This scholarship cannot be combined with the Texas Woman’s University Honors Scholar award, but may be combined with other institutional scholarships and federal aid. Students must meet both academic and participatory requirements for scholarship renewal.

Eligibility Requirement

  • Acceptance to TWU as a full-time entering freshman
  • Strong academic ability
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Demonstrated ability to lead in your high school or community
  • Interest in government and non-profit agencies, preferred
  • Successful completion of an interview
  • Pell Grant eligibility is preferred, but not required
  • The following majors may be given priority: Political Science, Social Work, Criminal Justice
  • Students are reviewed holistically. Factors including academic achievement, leadership ability and involvement will be considered.
    Standardized test scores will not be required for the fall 2021 application

  5. REQUIRED - Essay 2: Leadership Ability - In approximately 500 words, describe a situation where you displayed leadership. Be sure to describe your actions and the actions of those around you, and explain what you accomplished.
