Dr. Johnie Christian

Johnie Christian was born Nov. 5, 1898, in Rosston. She worked as an education research and program specialist, for the US Office of Education and was head of the Department of Home Economics at Texas Woman’s University in Denton. A student at TWU when it was the College of Industrial Arts, Dr.Christian received her bachelor of science degree in home economics in 1926 and immediately began a lifetime career in her chosen field. After several years of teaching and program development in home economics at Memphis and Plainview, she returned to TWU to assist with its Vocational Home Economics Teacher Education Program. She took time from her duties to complete her master of science degree at Iowa State University in 1935 and a doctorate from Ohio State University in 1940-45 She served as department head from 1945-51. Dr. Christian worked several months with the military government in 1949 as a member of a team of 20 Americans assisting with the reorganization of teacher education in Germany. She was named Texas Home Economist of the Year in 1970 and received the Alumni Centennial Award in 1958 and Lumni Merit Award for outstanding contributions to human welfare in 1978, both from Iowa State University. She received the Outstanding Service Award of the American Vocational Assoc. in 1968. Dr. Christian died Friday, April 21, 1995, at the age of 96.
