Dr. Dawn S. Chaney '63, '66, '70

Dawn Chaney was born and raised in a small town of 600 in Central Pennsylvania. She earned degrees at Penn Hall College in Pennsylvania and is a three-time alumna of Texas Woman’s University. Dawn had a career in Higher Education that took her from Texas A&I University to the State University of New York, the University of Delaware, and ultimately to Bennett College in Greensboro, NC. In 1980 Dawn initiated an investment business, Chaney Properties, that started with one single family property that she still owns today. Her portfolio includes single family, multi-family, commercial, industrial and warehouse properties. Her area of concentration is in and around downtown Greensboro with a special focus on historic properties.

Her efforts at transforming Greensboro’s center city were recognized with awards for The Most Improved Commercial Property. A large historic restoration in the Fisher Park area of Greensboro is on the National Register of Historic Places. She was also recognized as one of the Business Women of the Year in 2009 by Triad Business Journal, received the Ed Kitchen Leadership award for her leadership, vision and dedication in the revitalization of Downtown Greensboro in 2014, and received the 2014 Spirit of Entrepreneur Award from Junior Achievement of Central NC. In 2015 Dawn was a recipient of the Athena Award.

Dawn serves her community as a member of the Board of Directors for the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce, Carolina State Bank, Arts Greensboro, the Carolina Theatre, and the SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). Dawn is on the Board of Visitors at UNCG and a member of the Guilford County Historic Development Commission. She is a founder of the Guilford Green Foundation and co-founder of its Endowment Fund that is housed at the Community Foundation of Greensboro. Dawn is a past Chair and a current member of Greensboro’s Redevelopment Commission. She is a past President of the Greensboro Landlords Association and past Chair of Downtown Greensboro, Inc. (DGI), Dawn is a long time supporter of the Women’s Resource Center and a proud member of the Women Presidents Organization.

Chaney Properties is a real estate investment company specializing in historic properties with a particular focus on development in downtown Greensboro.

Impact

Dr. Chaney has created two endowments to support students at TWU. In 2022, she created the Dr. Dawn S. Chaney Undergraduate Scholarship Endowment and the Dr. Dawn S. Chaney Graduate Scholarship Endowment. The endowments support students pursuing degrees in the School of Health Promotion and Kinesiology with a first preference for majors in Exercise Science and a first preference to those with demonstrated financial need as determined by FAFSA.
